News from Victoria, Australia is that the State Government there is set to introduce a tax on "Class-A" cemeteries. The "Class-A" cemeteries are publicly held and managed. The Heral Sun reports this morning:

The Government plans to charge the state's six class-A cemetery trusts a 3-5 per cent tax. In 2006 the cemetery trusts turned over $73 million.

The non-profit trusts get all their money from mourners paying for burials and cremations.

It would be the first time the trusts have had to pay such a tax. The state's 14 trusts were reduced to six after an auditor-general's report in 2006, which followed a rorting scandal in the 1990s.
