SMH: Waverley Cemetery gets to rest in peace

JENNIE CURTIN declares in today's Sydney Morning Herald that "The dearly departed can finally rest in peace". Well, those at Waverley Cemetery at least.

For years joggers and walkers on the Bondi to Coogee coastal trek have been skipping around, over and across the graves in Waverley Cemetery. A boardwalk opened yesterday that bypasses the cemetery, sparing the headstones further damage and providing spectacular views of the sea below.

The section was the missing link in the popular coastal trail. Its completion means there is now a continuous path for nine kilometres along the coast from Diamond Bay, north of Dover Heights, to south Coogee.

The cantilevered boardwalk is just 550 metres long but cost more than $2.5 million to build. The mostly stainless steel and wooden construction hugs the cliff edge and has five viewing platforms for those more inclined to sit and think than sprint past.
