Albury City Council City may privatise cremation

ALBURY Crematorium could be partly privatised if the city council decides to restructure the way Glenmorus Gardens and the other city cemeteries are operated.

Such a move was rejected by councillors in 2005 after funeral directors Lester & Sons had offered to lease the crematorium for 25 years.

Since then, Lester & Sons and John Hossack Funeral Services have each installed private cremators although these are at different locations from their funeral homes where services are held
The crematorium and cemeteries are run as a commercial business with operating expenses of about $1.2 million a year, leaving the council to subsidise it by about $370000. Burial and cremation fees for about 500 deceased persons a year are the main ...
