Centennial Park Cemetery in Adelaide is a finalist in the United Nations Association's World Environment Day Awards for its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Centennial Park says in recent years it has reduced its contribution to landfill waste by 97 per cent, and reduced its energy consumption by about 10 per cent. Chief executive officer Bryan Elliot says the cemetery embarked on a carbon off-setting program a year ago to further its environmental initiatives. "We've calculated, through this process the amount of carbon emissions our cremation process creates through the burning of the gases and things of that nature, and that comes down to a CO2 equivalent in tonnes, and from that, we can buy certified carbon off-sets to off-set that tonnage," he said.
