COIMBATORE: K. Gopal Memorial Trust, one of the three charitable trusts of the C.R.I. Pumps, has constructed a biomass gasifier crematorium at Saravanampatti on the city's northern border.

Constructed at Rs.2.20 crore to mark the 30th death anniversary of the company's founder K. Gopal, the crematorium is powered by renewable energy.

The trust said wood and bio-waste would be used as the source of energy.

Named “Moksha Griha”, the crematorium meets the demand of a large region, north and east of Ganapathy and the suburbs along Sathyamangalam Road, including the town panchayat of Saravanampatti.

The trust said the crematorium was built as part of the company's corporate-social responsibility.

Pricol, another private company, opened one a few years ago at Periyanaickenpalayam.

Corporation's plan

The Coimbatore Corporation is planning to construct two biomass gasifier crematoria.

A year ago, it had identified a portion of the erstwhile garbage yard at Kavundampalayam for one crematorium, estimated to cost Rs.2 crore.

Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Pongalur N. Palanisamy opened the crematorium at Saravanampatti on Saturday.

Apart from the members of the trust, Member of Parliament from Coimbatore P.R. Natarajan and former MP K. Subbarayan were also present.
