Dutch union critical of cardboard and wool coffins

Coffin made from woolAssociated Press reports that the (Dutch) National Crematoria Union has issued a warning to the Netherlands' cremation parlours not to accept cardboard or wool coffins, which have grown in popularity due to environmental concerns.

The union cites a number of dangerous incidents in which the lightweight coffins caught fire more quickly than traditional wooden caskets.

Union spokesman Henry Keizer said Wednesday that this endangered worker safety and injured mourners' feelings.

Keizer says the organization is in talks with coffin makers over environmentally friendly alternatives that are not dangerous.
