FUNERAL directors have a job few would envy. And among the most heartbreaking of their tasks is disposing of ashes that no one bothers to collect.
Relatives might be too old or ill. Many find it too traumatic, suggests Tom Sweeney, community relations officer at Macquarie Park Crematorium, who says about a third of ashes were never picked up.
But Max Perram, a funeral director for 40 years, is more blunt. "They don't care, most of them," he says.
