Grave space at a premium in Perth

According to an article in the West Australian, Perth is in the grip of a graveyard shortage, with the city needing extra cemetery space equal to about half the size of Kings Park over the next 20 years as the baby boomer generation starts to die.

Grave space is at such a premium that Perth’s biggest cemetery, Karrakatta, which is already crowded and has thousands of vacant graves reserved, would have been closed four years ago if it was not for constant renewal work.

Renewal efforts include using pathways between graves to make more burial plots and giving families the option of re-using a relative’s grave, under a “lift and deepen” policy.
