As the recession deepens, the state has buried four times as many people in unmarked pauper graves. Some parents have told a funeral home, which is employed by the NSW Coroner to conduct "destitute burials", that they can't afford to bury their children. Other bereaved families have had to leave it to the state to bury their loved ones in graves which hold six basic wood coffins because they have lost their jobs in the economic crisis. Anyway, that's what the Daily Telegraph tells us... Rookwood figures show there were 207 people given a destitute burial between 2006 and 2008 and 258 were cremated. Figures for this year are not available. A Rookwood spokesman said others around the state conducted destitute burials.
