Council moves to non-denominational cemeteries

ABC News reports that cemeteries in the Nambucca Shire are expected to abandon the use of denominational burial sites within the next 10 years.

The council plans to introduce unsegregated areas at Nambucca Heads, Macksville and Bowraville cemeteries because they are running out of plots and the lack of space could push up burial costs.

Macksville cemetery could implement the changes as soon as 2015.

The council's director of environment and planning, Greg Myers, says sections of land are unusable under the current system.

The policy is currently on display for public comment.
