Religious groups hoard burial sites

An article in the Canberra Times claims two of Canberra's largest religious groups, Catholics and Anglicans, face the prospect of running out of plots at Woden Cemetery within seven years while other religions have enough room for 50 years or more at the present rate of use and are attempting to accumulate centuries' worth of space in ACT cemeteries.

Despite the imbalance, moves to reallocate land are likely to be met with strong resistance from congregations with strict burial beliefs.

With a decision on a proposed new cemetery in southern Canberra pending, the chief executive of the ACT Public Cemeteries Authority, Hamish Horne, said every effort was being made to avoid having to ask some denominations to give up space in favour of others.
