According to the Cootamundra Herald, the refurbishment of a number of graves and monuments, many having a Australian Lebanese connection, was recently completed with the assistance of a $50,000 Federal Government grant. Over the weekend local residents joined members of the Australian Lebanese Historical Society Inc for the unveiling of plaque in the Cootamundra Cemeteryto commemorate the moment.

Joining the celebration as one of his first official duties was newly appointed Ambassador for Lebanon, HE Mr Jean Daniel.

One of the most moving stories is that of Historical Society member and Sydney resident John Koorey who, while researching the life of his grandparents who lived in Yass Road, discovered his great grandmother and a great uncle had migrated to Australia in the 1890s and were buried in the Cootamundra Cemetery.

 

Local Wiradjuri elder Bob Glanville delivered the Welcome to Country, describing, with fond memories, his own experience growing up with members of the Lebanese community in Cootamundra.

He recalled hanging out with the son of the local fruit and vegetable shop proprietor.

“Each and every one was a character who contributed to the fabric of Cootamundra,” Mr Glanville said.

The restored graves are located in the old section of the Cootamundra Cemetery.
