Hidden: A Rookwood Sculpture Walk 2011 is now calling for applications.

The Anglican and General Cemetery Trusts are once again partnering with Auburn Council to create the third annual Rookwood Sculpture Walk. Unlike previous years, the 2011 outdoor exhibition will be featured amongst the graves in one of the older sites of the cemetery and neighbouring areas. With views of the city on the horizon, this site offers artists a rare opportunity to showcase their work in an extremely thought provoking context.

The Trusts’ are proud to announce that for the first time since the exhibition’s inception, a $5,000 non-acquisitive award will be given to an artist whose work is exhibited in the outdoor sculpture exhibition. The judges will be looking for a well-considered and original outdoor sculpture or installation that poignantly deals with the themes of the Rookwood site.

On top of the $5,000 Award, Auburn City Council will be offering an artist, or collaborative artists, a one month residency at the Peacock Gallery and Auburn Arts Studio (located in the Auburn Botanical Gardens) at no cost to the artist/s. The successful artist (or collaborative artists) will also be offered an opportunity to exhibit their work in a solo or group show at the site.

New media artists are also invited to propose a site-specific new media installation for inside the All Souls Chapel, to run in tandem with the duration of the Rookwood Sculpture Walk. One artist, or collaborative artists, will be selected and will receive a total artist fee of $1,000.00.

Artists who would like to be considered to exhibit in this unique environment are invited to submit an expression of interest by Tuesday 30 November 2010. Artists from culturally diverse backgrounds and emerging and local artists are especially encouraged to enter.

The Trusts request artists address themes appropriate to the site, such as grief, loss, memory, death, mourning, spirituality, religion and heritage as well as the culture around memorial, eulogy, burial and ceremony. Artists can choose to approach these themes in a representational, symbolic or abstract way.
