Tweed shire to build crematorium?

crematorThe Tweed News reports Tweed Shire Council is looking at entering the growing crematorium business as the number of elderly people living and dying in the region continues to boom.

The council has called for expressions of interest in the supply and installation of a crematorium furnace at its Eviron regional cemetery as part of preparations for a detailed business plan on the project to be considered by councillors in the near future.

But the plan has surprised operators in the industry, with manager of the Melaleuca Station Memorial Gardens crematorium Phillip Willsallen yesterday voicing concern that the council could waste ratepayers’ money by competing with Tweed’s existing two crematoria.
