Police have charged a man with theft of bronze plaques from cemetery memorials across Adelaide's northern suburbs.

They have recovered 164 plaques after they were sold to a recycling depot at Pooraka. Police said the plaques, orginally costing $60,000 to make & install were sold as scrap metal for just $600.00.

Police Superintendent Barry Lewis  is quoted as saying  "For some person to be cutting them off and taking them and selling them for scrap metal at quite frankly nowhere near any of the value of what they're worth, I find that inexcusable and one of the lowest acts I'd ever think of," he said
