Salisbury SA considers the liability of cemeteries

GRAVE OPTIONS: Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge says possible solutions to a lack of burial sites include re-using old graves or extending Memorial Park.SALISBURY’S Memorial Park Cemetery in South Australia will reportedly reach capacity within five years, forcing the council to rethink burial options. The Spains Rd cemetery has a total of 5109 burial sites, with 111 currently available for lease. A further 570 grave sites will be built later this year, but all are expected to be filled by 2016. The really interesting part of this story is the deficit projection of the cemetery if it closes.

The Salisbury Memorial Park Masterplan, released last week, predicts the cemetery’s deficit will rise from $15,525 last financial year to $190,060 by 2019/20 because of reduced income from new grave leases.
