Posted by: Administrator

The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, in conjunction with organisations and members from the community, are developing a signposted heritage walk at Coburg Cemetery. This walk will promote local heritage and will be established by 21 October 2011, in time for History Week celebrations.

This cemetery was established in 1860 and is a significant Melbourne burial ground, boasting a number of notable memorials. Labor politicians and members of parliament who are buried here include John Andrew Arthur, William Guthrie Spence and Joseph Francis Hannan, while those to trade unionists include Laurence Cohen, Richard Henry Gill and Archibald Stewart. Eminent sports people include Collingwood football coach, Jock McHale, and jockey, Albert Renny, and victims of disaster include those from the S.S Dandenong steam disaster and the Sunshine Rail disaster.
