NZ: Suicide victims should be condemned - MP

Posted by: Administrator

Children who commit suicide should be condemned, to help deter others from following suit, a radical New Zealand MP has suggested.

Te Ururoa Flavell, a politician in the country's indigenous Maori Party, has raised the controversial idea that young people who take their own lives should not be allowed a traditional farewell with their family or at their local marae (meeting house).

The move was designed to combat New Zealand's dire youth suicide rates, which are the highest in the world after Japan and Finland.
