VIC: Six-figure asking price for Carlton burial plot

Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton is tempting buyers with a pricey afterlife, putting a $207,800 grave up for sale.

And just like bathing boxes in Brighton, this cathedral-style burial vault is worth more than some Melbourne flats - and even a few rural homes.

Built in 1866 as the “Summer House”, it is being offered as a burial site for the first time.

It has only limited views but enjoys floral and well-maintained surroundings. And some 300,000 neighbours.

Nicole Stow, from Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, said nearby “residents” included one of the founders of Melbourne, John Pascoe Fawkner, and ex-premier Duncan Gillies.
