RSL defers war cemetery decision

The national executive of the RSL says it is too soon to vote on a proposal to create a national war cemetery in Canberra.

The Victorian branch of the RSL wants a new cemetery built on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin which could be used for soldiers killed in action, Victoria Cross winners, former governors-general and former prime ministers.

It would be similar to the Arlington National Cemetery in the United States.

Other state and territory branches were expected to vote on the idea at the RSL's national executive today, but any decision has been deferred.
