VIC: Ensuring safety of resting places

Posted by: Administrator

An article in the Whittlesea Lear reports:

WIRE mesh fencing and security gates are being installed at Epping Cemetery in a bid to protect the 19th century landmark from vandals.

Whittlesea Mayor Rex Griffin said many headstones had been smashed and they presented a danger for visitors.

“At the moment anybody can walk through the place,” he said.

“We need proper fencing and proper gates. We’ve found granite blocks and headstones torn down and pushed over.

“We have a lot of people whose ancestors are buried there; their families are still living in Epping. We really want to bring the cemetery up to what it was out of respect for them.”
