What type of burial can I have?

Posted by: Mary Reid

Many cemeteries offer several types of burial where others may only have one or two kinds.  Types available are:

Full Monumental Grave:  This means the whole grave can be covered with a monument made from various materials such as marble, granite, sandstone, concrete, etc.  The type, style and size are subject to the rules and regulations of your cemetery.

Monumental Lawn:  This is a lawn grave that is kept mown by the cemetery and only a headstone is allowed.  The type, style and size are subject to the rules and regulations of your cemetery.

Lawn Graves:  Are also totally lawn except for a small plaque that’s placed at the head, either on a beam or flush with the lawn.

Crypts and Vaults:  Are for above ground entombment.  In NSW, a body must be embalmed and contained in a metal lined casket (currently titanium zinc) if it is being placed in an above ground structure.

Most cemeteries that have crypts and vaults available are usually in a mausoleum or garden crypt style.  Some cemeteries sell land to individual families so that they can build their own crypt or vault.
