Who has the authority to direct the method of disposal of the cremated remains?
Instructions regarding the disposal of cremated remains will be accepted only from the person who applies for cremation referred to as the Applicant for Cremation. The crematorium will write to the applicant shortly after the cremation (generally about two weeks) requesting instructions as to the disposition of the ashes, such as memorialisation, collection etc. If you are undecided say so, and the crematorium will retain the remains for a reasonable period (normally 3 to 6 months).
The applicant may make a written transfer of this right to another person whose written instructions will thereupon be accepted.
